Web copy for Arizona Real Estate - 3 pages

Home Page - 507 words

Real estate in Arizona is beautiful and spectacular. The desert offers a unique environment, with incredible recreational opportunities, stunning scenery and wonderful weather, ideal for families, and for retirement.

The history of Arizona stretches back as far as 25,000 years, although little is known about the people who lived in the area then. What is known is that the Hohokam (A.D. 500–1450) were the first to develop extensive irrigation systems, unknowingly setting the stage for the future. The Pueblo people flourished in Arizona between the 11th and 14th centuries, building many of the elaborate cliff dwellings that still stand. The Apache and Navajo came to the area in c.1300 from Canada.

The first Spanish explorer to find Arizona was probably Cabeza de Vaca in 1536. Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led an expedition from Mexico in 1540 looking for the seven legendary cities of gold, traveled as far as the Grand Canyon. Missions were built near Nogales (1696) and Tucson (1700).

The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the U.S. Mexican war, giving the United States title to part of Arizona. The balance of the state was purchased from Mexico in 1853, in part to encourage rail road development.

There was intermittent warfare between U.S. soldiers and the Apaches from 1861 to 1886.  Settlement was encouraged by the Homestead Act of 1862, the Desert Land Act of 1877 and the Carey Land Act of 1894, (1877), and the Carey Land Act (1894)—all of which turned land over to settlers and required them to develop it.

The 1900s saw the beginning of modern irrigation development. First were cannels not unlike those of the Hohokam and often following their routes, some of which are in use today. Water allowed farming and the population growth which continues today. Copper mining became important during the same period, furthering development.

World War II saw building of airports for pilot training and other installations to support the war effort. The end of the war saw many soldiers and their families return to the area to put down roots and raise families.

Real estate in Arizona has been strong for many years and all indications are that strength will continue. Home sales, including single-family houses, condos and co-ops have not only appreciated, sometimes dramatically, the actual number of homes sold has increased as well.

The communities of Mesa, Chandler, Tempe, Gilbert and Queen Creek, which are southeast of Phoenix, offer unparalleled real estate opportunities. Fueled by the high tech industry, high home prices in California, a significant increase in jobs, and by good planning, all kinds of housing can be found in these areas. There are urban condos, condos on golf courses, and condos for both families and retirees.

Close to Phoenix gives each of these communities easy access to the advantages of a major urban city while living away from it all.

Single family homes range from remodeled bungalows to modern homes in communities ideal for raising children. There is still land ideal for dream homes, and almost unlimited real estate investment opportunities.

Mesa - 506 words

Mesa, Arizona, is about 20 miles southeast of Phoenix and close to the Salt River. It was first opened by Mormons in 1878. It was called Mesa because the area on a plateau a bit above the valley floor. Right from the beginning, Mesa was designed with an eye toward real estate profits; the first town plan called for streets that were 130 feet wide. Growth was immediate; just over a decade later, the 1984 census counted some 648 people.

Real growth for the area began during World War II when, in 1941, two bases were built to train pilots. Falcon Field, now Falcon Field Municipal Airport, was built for the British Royal Air Force and sometime later Williams Air Force Base, now Williams Gateway Airport, was built for U.S. pilots. When the war ended, many military families, including that of John J. Rhodes, later a Minority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, returned to settle in Mesa to raise families and influence the growth of the area.

The late 1940s saw the development of reliable air conditioning. This new ability to cool buildings, including homes, which we take for granted today, made it possible for Mesa to become a desirable destination for both tourists and new residents.

Probably because of the airports, and the then cheap land that surrounded them, aerospace industries moved to the Mesa area, but citrus and cotton farming was the main industry until the 1960s.

The late 1960s began the change and growth we see today. Population pressures from the Phoenix area meant people moving to Mesa because land was inexpensive and away from the pressures of the city. High tech companies were attracted to the area and health facilities developed to serve the growing number of residents of all ages.

Growth in Mesa has been spectacular. Every decade, with the exception of the 1920s, has seen at least an astonishing 79% increase in population, and the trend continues today.
